Reader’s Question:

Hi, I’m a 17-year old student here in Marietta, Georgia and I just got my learner’s permit. Is there an insurance company who will cover me even if I don’t have a driver’s license yet?

It would not be simple to acquire auto insurance in your name if you only have a learner’s permit in Marietta, Georgia. The bigger auto insurance providers may not give you coverage because you only have a learner’s permit. The insurance laws and the criteria for getting insured are different in each state. So there is no assurance that you can obtain auto insurance under your name if you have a learner’s permit. But some auto insurance providers would give coverage with a learner’s permit since you are more than 16 years old. More likely, they would have tougher requirements and their rates are higher.

The first thing you have to do to get insured is to search online and find a number of auto insurance providers because this would give you a lot of options. You may also get in touch with insurance agents that you could find in the directory and inquire if they could insure you even if you only have a learner’s permit. Inquire also on the terms, conditions and the rates for different types if auto insurance policies. Make sure also that you have the necessary safety devices in your vehicle that you’d like to insure.
